IW 15 Farnborough 22
The Isle of Wight’s last home game before Christmas was met by strong winds and a determined Farnborough side.
Playing with the wind in the first half, the home side could not subdue wholly the driving game of the visitors and it was them who scored first from a lineout drive. The Island came straight back with their own line drive and Ryan Stewart touched down. Harry Dye added the conversion.
Much of the rest of the first half saw Farnborough drive close ball, making inroads, and the Island playing the ball back with the wind. A Dye penalty from half way cancelled out a close range Farnborough penalty gave the home aside a two point half time lead.
An early yellow card for Andy Brown presented the Island with a ten minute spell of pressure, with the defence in outstanding form to only allow one visitor try and conversion. However a further try meant that the home side were 12 points down.
Determined and sustained effort from the Island saw them held up over the visitors line on four occasions, but a well worked try from Mikey Wood brought them within seven points and a league bonus. Despite further effort, a further try was not forthcoming and the bonus point had to be settled for.
Rouse Intelligent Financial Solutions Man of the match went to Ollie Boulter.
The final 15 minutes saw a historical event as Sam Spencer-Brading came on for his 1st XV debut, following his uncle Neil and grandfather Stuart to be the third generation of that family to put on the club colours.
