IWRFC 13 Norfolk Arms 0
Sunday, September 6, 2009 at 5:19PM With unknown opponents visiting the Island for this RFU National Vase Prelim game, the home side could not rest on last week’s performance and took the game to their visitors from the start. With strong driving runs from the forwards and the ball being moved wide, the Island looked as though they would take control, but their only reward of the first half was a Phil Baldwin penalty.
Norfolk Arms started to get in to the game and managed to break a couple of tackles to put pressure on the home side. Despite these few defensive errors, all quickly recovered, the Island defense was solid and robust throughout.
Turning round, the Island soon continued to pressure the visitors and a deft chip from Baldwin was collected on the bounce by Chris Williams to score.Despite this, the Island lost some direction until a sin bin reduced them to 14 players for 10 minutes. This seemed to focus the side, as they tightened up possession and controlled the ball.
After a succession of forward drives the ball was moved wide and Tom Enticknap scores in the corner. From here on the home side controlled the play and even when in their own 22, the defensive hits stopped the visitors in their tracks.
Impressive displays were given by Andy White, Neil Brading and debutante James Curran, but Lymington Presision Engineers Man of the Match went to Iain Davidson for an impressive all round performance from second row.
Saturday the Island entertain Verwood at Wootton in their first Hampshire Two fixture of the season, with a 3PM kick off.
