IW 51-5 Overton Report by Dave Metcalfe
The Island’s first home game turned out to be a convincing victory, but at a price. The first 20 minutes saw the Islanders dominate, but fail to cross the line, with two Lewis Murray penalties the only points.
A shoulder injury to flanker James Webster allowed veteran Andy White to join the fray. A Owen Herbert try followed, with Murray adding the kick.
From the kick off Ollie Boulter snatched the ball out of the air, setting up solid ball. A chip over was chased down by White, who controlled the ball to score, again Murray adding the kick.
Overton were then reduced to 14 players as a yellow card was given for continued infringements.
The home side took full advantage with Luke Chandler latching on to a backs move to score.
The bonus point fourth try followed shortly after the second half restart. Pressure at the scrum led to Dave Blackman touching down, Murray adding the kick.
The Island’s pick and go game allowed White to score his second, soon followed by Chandler’s second. Dan Stirrup then had to leave the field with a rib injury.
The best move of the game had the ball moved down the back line for Alex Smith to cut a line, Herbert to carry the move on and James Fitton to cross and score.
To Overton’s credit they rallied to cross the home side’s line in the dying moments. In the last play of the game an injury to Alex Augustus took the edge off this impressive victory.
