History of the Isle Of Wight Rugby
Football Club
a
Post War Years
The revival of the club came about
in 1950 when a public meeting, held
in September of that year at Ryde Aero
Club, backed up the actions of the
small group of enthusiasts who had
negotiated the use of the pitch at
Ryde Airport, the use of Ryde Aero
Club as headquarters and the taking
over of fixtures, shirts, goalposts
etc. from the disbanding Saunders Roe
Club.
Mr. W.A. Christy was elected President
and Messrs. Daniel, Hawker and O’Brien
were appointed as secretary, Treasurer
and Captain respectively. Club jerseys
for the restart were dark blue and
remain so up to 1953/54 when it was
decided to change to blue and gold
hoops the Clubs current colours.
The
frequency of change in Club colours
is second only to the movement between
grounds. In 1954/55 the club played
in black and amber hoops; in 1955/56
blue and gold became the favourites
again and lasted up till 1963/64. At
that point it was decided to revert
to the initial club colours of red and
gold; In 1965/1966 the colours were
once again changed to the dark blue
strip which was the case up until 1975
when reverted back to the faithful blue
and gold hoops which has remained our
clubs colours ever since (Were fashion
conscious on the Isle of Wight!).
Up
to 1953/54 the Club generally only ran
one team, but then came the start of
a regular “A” XV (Otherwise
know as the “Yellow Perils”)
and for several periods during our history
three sides have turned out.
